The project brings together Chris “Hot Toddy” Todd and Jim “Ron Basejam” Baron of Crazy P with Ben “BJ” Smith of Smith & Mudd. The band began unintentionally, during a weekend with no plan beyond experimenting in Crazy P’s Nottingham studio. What emerged was an unexpected synergy that grew, slowly and naturally, into a body of work shaped by trust, freedom and time. World Elephant Day blends Crazy P’s established dancefloor sensibility with more introspective songwriting and detailed instrumental arrangements. Across the record, the trio move fluidly between styles, from the disco-leaning pulse and the 80s-referencing drive to the stripped-back textures. Though some tracks were written over a decade ago, and others far more recently, the album coheres through chemistry rather than genre, the sound of three musicians weaving instinctively around each other. “We didn’t really know what we were,” remembers Chris. “We didn’t have a plan at all. The first few things we wrote were just us relying on what we did elsewhere… but after a few days messing around, something clicked. We found a synergy, if that’s not too grand a word for it.” That synergy between Chris Todd, Jim Baron and Ben Smith is what became White Elephant. The release of “Lovers” further illustrates the collective’s range, with each remix offering a distinct interpretation, from refined club-focused arrangements to more expansive, atmospheric reworks.
