MJ Wemoto is an African music producer, rap vocalist, and one of the longest-running independent voices in African music commentary. His journey in music began in 2002 with a radio jingle for DJ Hence on Radio 3 in Zimbabwe. That same year he recorded his first independent song, and by 2003 he was signed to one of the local music studios operating in Zimbabwe at the time. He began releasing music independently in 2005 before stepping away from the mic around 2010 to focus on life and studies. Even away from the booth, the love for African music never left. In 2006 he began writing album reviews covering Zimbabwean artists at a time when very few people were documenting the country's music landscape online. What started as written reviews evolved into a full audio and video format in 2018, growing into a catalogue of over 400 reviews and a community of more than 15,000 subscribers with over 1 million lifetime views. In 2020, after a decade-long hiatus from making music, MJ Wemoto stepped back behind the boards and into the booth. What started as a quiet rediscovery quickly became a prolific second chapter. Now with 100+ released productions and vocal performances spanning Amapiano, Sgija, Afro House, Kizomba, Zouk, and Kompa Gouyad, the music draws on over 20 years of lived experience in African sound. The MJ Wemoto channel is home to all of it. Original music, honest independent reviews, and opinion commentary pieces on the sounds of the African continent and global diaspora.
