Litmus emerged as part of the space-rock genre in the late 1990’s. However, they are not to be thought of as throwbacks to their forebears - the likes of Hawkwind and Gong. Litmus are harder, darker, contemporary and urgent. Maintaining a compelling and instantly recognisable sound of close harmony vocals, driving bass-lines, intense guitar riffing and frantic drumming, against a backdrop of melodic mellotron and organ sounds sprinkled liberally with analogue synthesizer effects. Across four acclaimed albums - You are Here (Space Music), Planetfall, Aurora (both on Rise Above Records) and Slaughterbahn (Litmus Music) they encompass everything from atmospheric soundscapes, to garage psychedelia, grunge and metal. As a live act Litmus never fail to impress: they have taken the alternative rock contingent at UK and European venues and festivals (including Roadburn in Holland) by storm, winning Best Heavy Rock Act at the 2008 Indy Awards. Still recognisable as having an otherworldly quality, the Litmus sound nevertheless appeals more widely to fans of hard rock, metal, particularly of the stoner/doom variety, garage and punk, as well as adherents of Krautrock and electronica. Their live shows are LOUD and drenched with projections, strobes and lasers.
