For over three decades, Ryan Lum has been the creative force behind Love Spirals Downwards, aka Lovespirals, and LSD. A multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer, Lum has crafted an ever-evolving body of music defined by lush textures, intricate melodies, and cinematic emotion. From the atmospheric soundscapes of the 1990s to the genre-fluid explorations of the 2000s and beyond, his work spans ethereal acoustic and electronica dream pop, sometimes colored by folk, jazz, or blues influences. Originally launched as Love Spirals Downwards on Projekt Records with vocalist Suzanne Perry, the project also featured notable guest appearances from Jennifer Ryan Fuller and Suzanne’s sister, Kristen Perry. At the turn of the millennium, Lum began collaborating with Anji Bee, and together they founded the Chillcuts label, establishing Lovespirals as a deeply independent and ongoing creative partnership releasing a diverse catalog that continues to resonate with longtime listeners and a new generation discovering their music. Committed to full artistic control, Lum records, mixes, produces, and often masters his own work while preserving his earlier catalog through meticulous remastering and reissues. In recent years, he has returned to the Love Spirals Downwards name for a series of new singles that blend the project’s classic ethereal aesthetic with contemporary production — affirming a creative vision that remains vibrant, expansive, and forward-looking.
