Darkest Hour emerged in 1995 from the same DC hardcore ecosystem that had given the world Bad Brains, Minor Threat, and Scream more than a decade earlier. Driven by the core duo of vocalist John Henry and guitarist Mike Schleibaum, the band kept one foot in the DIY community and the other planted in metal fury. They played with sacred scene innovators such as Unbroken and Integrity, introducing hardcore kids to the melodic death metal style pioneered by Carcass and At The Gates. “We existed in the scene before we ever entered the industry,” Mike says. By 2004, the group had become leaders themselves in the burgeoning New Wave of American Metal, joining Ozzfest with Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Slayer, and Slipknot, alongside their peers in Lamb of God and Unearth. Three decades in, Mike, John, bassist Aaron Deal (since 2011), drummer Travis Orbin (2012), and guitarist Nico Santora (2021) are certified lifers who continue to chase impact, connection, and velocity with urgency, untethered to expectations, and stronger than ever with their new album, Suffer Divine (MNRK Heavy).
