A disciple of Pt. Rattan Mohan Sharma and grand-disciple of Pandit Jasraj, Aly Sunderji has established a distinctive presence in Canada’s music scene. His musical journey began in childhood, listening to the geets of Khursheed and learning ginans from Anaar Kanji. From an early age, he felt music was not simply a passion, but his calling. Aly is versed in Bhajan, Kirtan, Haveli Sangeet, Sufi and Bhakti music, and Rajasthani and Gujarati folk traditions. A devoted vocal coach and ginan trainer, he has recorded over 500 ginans and produced the albums Prem Prakaash, Guru Vandana, and Su'ood. For Aly, music is ibaadat—a way of praising, yearning, imploring, and conversing with the Creator. Inspired by Rumi, Meera, Kabir, and Tulsidas, he is also an avid writer of Sufi poetry. In 2008, he released An Ode to Shah Karim, an album of spoken-word poetry. As an adult on the autism spectrum, Aly uses music to express his inner world and connect with others, firmly believing that music is medicine. Outside of music, Aly shares his passion on YouTube as the “Mithai Man,” where his creativity extends from music into the kitchen.
